Nav N Go Hosted the Navigation Industry at the Canalys Forum
From 8th–10th September, the captains of the navigation industry held their third annual conference in Budapest, Hungary. At the Canalys Forum 2008, the CEOs of the companies driving the industry forward, including Microsoft, Nokia, Orange, and Loquendo, analyzed the present and the future of the sector. Nav N Go not only hosted the conference, but was also a platinum-grade sponsor of the event. The Canalys Forum has become the most prestigious navigation event in the world in recent years. This is why it was such a great honor for Nav N Go that Budapest was chosen as the venue for the conferences, previously hosted in Bangalore and Taipei. Nav N Go was the joint platinum-grade sponsor of the event, together with Microsoft.
In the Ballroom of the Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal Budapest, leaders of some of the most dynamic companies in the industry, such as Mukund Ghangrude and Ilya Bukhsteyn (Microsoft Windows Embedded), Yves Maitre and Olaf Swantee (Orange), and Thomas Leliveld (Nokia), analyzed the current status of the sector, and voiced their opinions about the future of personal navigation.
Nav N Go’s Chief Operating Officer also gave a presentation at the forum. In his speech, András Fazakas emphasized that cooperation between the industry’s role players could provide the way out of the current slump being witnessed in the PND market. This will be a challenging task, given the diverse interests of the individual companies, but if we keep in mind the ultimate objective – maintaining the explosive level of development in navigation technology – it should still have a chance.
Péter Balogh, Nav N Go’s Chief Technology Officer, also spoke at the event; as a member of a panel session with four professional panelists, he answered questions from the delegates. He highlighted the Nav N Go iGO 8 engine, with its powerful 3D visualization, currently running on 150 different devices and 7-8 different platforms, which clearly proves the company’s flexibility and the developers’ adaptability. With the number of PNDs sold decreasing, it is difficult to predict which particular innovation will provide the future solution; however, the transfer to smartphones, the versatile connectivity of navigation software, and the continued development of white-label solutions are likely to be the keywords of the new upsurge of the industry.
Canalys, among other services, specializes in delivering high quality industry statistics, and predicts the expected market trends (www.canalys.com). The company forecasts that approximately 27 million smartphones with integrated GPS will ship in 2008 in EMEA. This figure is expected to amount to one third of smartphones sold in the region. The analysis also indicates that this year a total of only 25 million PNA devices will be purchased by users, which clearly shows that, parallel to the stagnation in the PND market, navigation functions are being taken over by smartphones.
