“I am always the first one to take on a new task…”
There are two types of people: those who prefer steady and monotonous work and others, who just love change and see a challenge in new assignments. Goro is the latter, for sure. Initiative has been one of his main characteristics throughout his life. As a computer developer he jumped from one enterprise to another - no wonder he became one of the leading developers of Nav N Go, and along with his team, they have built this market leading software. How did you get started in your career as a developer?
I was always attracted to the world of computers, and back then, like everybody else, I started with a Commodore 64 at the age of 10-12. It was then that computer technology became a permanent part of my life. So much so, that at the age of 18, I established my first company where we worked mainly on virus decoding.
Did your studies also progress in a technical direction?
Yes, I studied at the Faculty of Technical Informatics at the University of Veszprém and this was where I met Petya. We soon embarked on our first enterprise, which operated with success. However, by the time we finished university, we sold it. Petya and I stayed in touch, and started our game developer business, PDAmill Kft, which has since become a part of Nav N Go Kft.
One enterprise after another... Did you have plans of your own?
I always liked to set my own pace and be my own boss. I tried something else after graduating from university and took on a full-time job as IT manager of a company, but I soon discovered that this was not my world. At that time, of course, there was always some great new venture to get started on, for instance, the game development company I started before PDAmill.
Where did the idea for PDAmill come from?
Like I said, Petya and I were good friends at university. He had just returned from Finland when I was about to leave my job at that time. He had already worked in game development at a smaller company, but it was one day at home, while mulling over a beer, that the idea started to take shape and we got serious about it. . PDAmill already existed - we just needed to reshape it.
Your games turned out to be very successful and have been ever since. What makes them different from other PDA game software?
We have always been quality orientated which is something that might not be financially profitable in the beginning, but you can’t afford to overlook it in the long run .The word slowly spread that we produce high level games with advanced graphics and as our demand increased, so did our reputation.
This is how Nav N Go found you...
A common friend of ours, Tomi, recommended us to Attila Kátai, Nav N Go’s current content development director, who was looking for developers to produce the new navigation software. This was a course that had excited us previously, so it was a good chance to try it out. This was a new area for all of us, and we were very enthusiastic about it.
What was the first step?
My brother (who also works at the company) and I started to assemble the developing team and assign work. My job was to establish and lead the entire project. We had to hire more and more staff and it was not long before we outgrew the office - it was good to see how well the plan of iGoMy was progressing and how right our decision had been to start in the area of navigation.
What is your job in iGO My way?
I am currently running the development of the latest version of iGoMy way. My team and I are trying to get as far ahead of our competitors as possible in the field of innovation and technology. It is good to see how well Nav N Go is starting to do and how big our small initial project has grown.
What about games?
We are working on them full blast again. It is true, that they were parked on the side a bit in the beginning period of iGoMy way, but we are concentrating on this section again. However, this is not my job any more. Games, just like the rest of the content, are very important. In my opinion the market competition of the future is going to be won by those that can provide the most software in one handheld device. So there will be more and more demand for PDA’s to be used not only for navigation, but games too. No wonder iGO My way contains free games as well. This, of course, is only part of it, and all the rest will be equally as important, starting with the calendar function all the way to phone support.
Are you working on this kind of software too?
Yes, there has been a separate team working on this too, and we have already introduced our first mobile application package
on the 15 March 2007 opening of CeBIT.
What do you consider is iGO My way best at?
It is powered by a fast engine that makes its use much more convenient. Everything is made fast, such as route planning and address search. In terms of user interface, the 2008 version will also have more new features to offer.
So, with iGO My way there is always something to work on?
Sure there is. Technology under development and the ever increasing GPS navigation both keep presenting new challenges. This is the thing that gets me, and what I enjoy doing most out of all my tasks is to build something out of nothing and then perfect it. Once this is done, I am no longer interested.
Could this happen to iGO My way as well?
Well, not yet. Right now we have development work coming out of the top of our heads. Once the development of iGo My way is “self-propelled” there will be something new in navigation to start on. So far, I have been the person at the company to throw themselves first into the unknown of a new area.
Doesn’t it bother you that work leaves you hardly any time for anything else?
I love my work and so I often do not even notice that I am working, besides, I am surrounded by my friends at work. And the success of the last year and a half is more than enough reward for all those days I worked around the clock.
